Environmental Policy

Icelandair hotels awarded Environmental Company of the Year

The environmental award of SA-Business Iceland was awarded to Icelandair Hotels on the 12th of October 2017. In the jury’s opinion Icelandair Hotels has implemented environmental management systems and set ambitious environmental objectives, along with making sustainability a goal within the business operations. It has made significant progress in increasing resource utilization and reducing waste. For example, the company's largest establishment has saved electricity and cold water on an annual basis equivalent to the average annual use of more than 100 households and hot water equivalent to the average annual consumption of 260 households. The amount of waste has also been reduced by 6 tonnes per year, despite the fact that the company has been expanding.

It was duly noted how well the company has managed to integrate environmental policies into all its activities. All employees of the company receive training and education on the environmental policy and environmental management system of the company through recruitment training and on special courses. The company has also received recognition for their contribution in educating their employees.

Environmental achivements

Icelandair Group’s entire operations have been granted environmental certification. Icelandair Hotels have been a pioneer in this major reform project and achieved  international environmental certification ISO 14001 at all hotels in 2015, certified by a third party, BSI.

The main attraction of Iceland is pure and untouched nature. Icelandair Group aims to be a leader in environmental matters, and Icelandair hotels have been at the forefront in Iceland and are the only hotels in Iceland with this international certification which, among other things, ensures transparency towards customers.

Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura was the first hotel in Iceland to receive the ISO 14001 certification in June 2012 and received the environmental award of the Icelandic Tourist Board in 2014. Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura  has for example achieved great results in reducing electricity per night of occupancy by 21% over 5 years.

Icelandair Hotels recognize their environmental responsibility and all entities in the Icelandair Hotel chain operate according to the international environmental management standard ISO 14001.

This dedication to environmental protection is unique in the Icelandic hotel business and our goal at Icelandair Hotels is to continually improve our environmental performance without compromising the outstanding level of service our guests have come to expect.

  • Reduce waste and increase recycling
  • Icelandair hótel Reykjavík Natura - BSI ISO 14001Choose nature friendly products and services
  • Emphasize using local products and Icelandic ingredients
  • To follow the current environmental legislation and aim to exceed it
  • Inform guests about our environmental policy and how they can participate and help
  • Educate employees and service providers about environmental issues

How do we practice positive interaction with the environment?

As an example, we monitor our usage of electricity monthly, water and our waste management system. We try to save our electricity usage, hot and cold water and encourage our guests to use their bath towel more than once. We recycle all our organic waste and special waste is taken to special services. We try to use environmentally friendly cleaning materials, paper and printing offices. We limit driving and flights as possible and aim at buying local and organic products.

What is ISO 14001?

  • The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) provides a standard measurement system for hotels to calculate and improve environmental performance through a systemized approach.
  • ISO 14001 is designed to help businesses remain commercially successful without overlooking environmental responsibilities.
  • It can also help Icelandair Hotels to grow while reducing the environmental impact of this growth.
