Peak Fall Colors in Iceland

Magazine Peak Fall Colors in Iceland

A common question we get is, When do fall colors peak in Iceland? The answer may surprise you. For many people, the seasons occur at certain intervals - predictable and normal to where you live. Since most people do not live just below the Arctic Circle, Iceland’s seasons may seem a bit out of synch with the norm.  For example, Iceland celebrates it official “First Day of Summer” the first Thursday after April 18th. We are not saying that the weather agrees with this date, it’s just how Icelanders historically break up the year - you’d probably do the same thing if you lived at this latitude.

Summers are brief in Iceland, and the beginning of Fall is right on the heels of what most would associate with the summer months.  The colors of fall can start as early as Late August and typically show peak colors in mid-September, sometimes even early September.

So, if you are looking to see Iceland’s peak fall colors, your best bet is late August to mid-September.  That said, Iceland’s particular Fall show of colors may be different than you expect. Iceland doesn’t have a lot of trees, so the color change shows up mostly in the mosses, grass and low shrubbery.

If you plan to visit Iceland at this time of year, bring layers of clothing so that you are prepared for possible cold weather.  You may still get Summer temps during this time of year but, always be prepared for the weather and temps to turn towards Winter.  If you want to see some of Iceland's best Fall foliage, we suggest visiting the East coast of Iceland which has lots of trees. You can stay at Berjaya Herad Hotel in Egilsstadir. Cheers from Berjaya Hotels. Iceland’s premiere hotel chain with 9 locations in all the prime locations!
