Iceland´s Midnight Sun
Iceland is chock-full of stunning landscapes and breathtaking views all year round. However, there is one special time of year when people in Iceland can soak it all in no matter what time of day (or night). In the summertime, the sun barely sets below the horizon before it rises back up again, creating striking photo opportunities for locals and travelers alike. This natural phenomenon is referred to as The Midnight Sun, earning its name by the sun remaining visible all throughout the night. This amazing sight can be seen in places that are in close proximity with the Arctic Circle. Days are extended even longer in the Northeastern part of Iceland, simply because it is that much closer to the Arctic Circle.
After a long, grey winter, Icelanders are anxious to take advantage of the extended daylight. When the midnight sun is shining, people partake in all kinds of special festivities and traditional daytime activities including running, swimming, and playing full rounds of golf. There is even a Midnight Sun Run held in June where you can sign up for a half-marathon, 10K, or 5K, (get your running shoes ready!) Once youve finished the race, take a dip in the geothermal pool located near the finish line. Or, if you just came to relax, simply sit back and enjoy the views!
So if youre planning a trip between mid-May and July, you can look forward to enjoying Iceland's Midnight sun, which, with its abundant solar energy brings bursts of color and soaring spirits to our tiny island-nation. The only downside is when it's time to sleep and all that sunshine can make it hard to fall asleep. Here in Iceland, we call this a "good problem." Don't worry, all of our hotels have blackout curtains - we got you covered. Cheers!
