The Best Things About Iceland

Magazine The Best Things About Iceland

Ok, let’s get one thing out of the way before we dive in. This list is, and only can be, opinion.  That doesn’t mean it won’t be useful to you. And, if you ever travel to Iceland, or have already been, you might end up agreeing!

Almost everyone who’s seen Iceland will say it is unique and beautiful. This is true and most would accept this as an axiom.  Oddly though, Iceland’s natural beauty is only some of its best elements. Guess we’re hoping a few of these surprise you! Now that we’ve got you interested, here’s our Best Things About Iceland list:

The fresh air - A product of what Iceland isn’t. It isn’t crowded. It isn’t part of the mainland which is more polluted. It isn’t powered by traditional power plants; except for cars & trucks, Iceland gets all of its power from renewable and non-polluting sources. It isn’t really near anything except Greenland. As a result, the air is fresh. It’s something you’ll notice the second you step out of the airport.

The clean water - Where in the world can you drink water directly from a stream and not get sick?  Answer: Iceland and maybe 3 other places worldwide.  If you are out in nature, you can just dip your hand in a stream and enjoy cold, fresh and amazing tasting water!  And, the quality of the water coming out of the taps is just the same.  The water is so clean, it comes through the tap untreated.

Abundant and cheap hot water - Iceland uses geothermal-heated (from geothermal sources) water to heat all of its homes and is the sourec of their hot water. The water that comes out of the tap, pretty much came out of the ground. Within reason, you can enjoy a really long shower, or fill a bath tub with no guilt - and just luxuriate. And, Icelanders put this abundance to good use in the forming of swimming pools that are open all year round.

Fresh fish - If you're a foodie and love fish, you’ll love Iceland.  This is what they do. This is what they have always done. And, whether you order it in a restaurant or buy some from a local fish store, you can rest assured it will be fresh.

Icelandic hot dogs - Seems weird that a lowly hot dog would make a “best of a country” list?  Maybe. That just means, most likely, that you haven’t tried one.  They are made with pork and smoked lamb with natural casings. They are served in a warm soft bun, with fried onions, remoulade (similar to mayo), a sweet mustard and ketchup.

Driving the Ring Road - If you’re looking for the ultimate road trip, do yourself a favor and book a trip to Iceland, rent a car and just go. You’ll see so much beauty, amazing vistas and exotic attractions, your neck will be sore from craning and you memory card on your camera will be full...of wonderfulness.

Getting away from it all, easily - Some may love Reykjavik’s bustling nightlife. If you ask us, being able to easily get away from it all is amazing. We say easy, because Iceland, which is about the size of Kentucky, has a population of just under 350,000, two thirds of which live in the capital city of Reykjavik.  That means that most of Iceland has no people, just miles and miles of unspoiled nature, and one doesn’t have to drive far to experience this.

Waterfalls - If waterfalls make you smile, you’ll probably be smiling all the time in Iceland. You’ll probably need a jaw massage.  Seriously, Iceland is riddled with waterfalls great and small. If waterfalls were a currency, Iceland would be rich.

So there you go, our (hopefully) unique list of The Best Things About Iceland. From Berjaya Hotels, who encourages you to enjoy Reykjavik - hopefully at one of our two Reykjavik locations - and then go out and explore our great country. Besides, we have 9 Iceland hotel locations so you can rest comfortably almost anywhere you go!  Cheers.
