August Weather in Iceland
Oh, to be in Iceland in August! With an abundance of sun through the summer months, Icelands Nordic flora and fauna respond with a show of bright and verdant green. And if that werent enough, there are plenty of activities to enjoy. The first August weekend in 2014 starts off with the Commerce Day (link to blog), then theres the Reykjavik Gay Pride celebration from the 5th - 10th. And, as if that werent enough, the month ends with the wildly popular Reykjavik Culture Night and Reykjavik Marathon. Now that weve sparked your interest, heres what you can expect from the weather.
Daylight
The days are rapidly getting shorter after the summer solstice. But, dont worry, theres still plenty of daylight. August 1st boasts 17:51 hours of daylight, while the end of the month, August 31st, has 14:37 hours of daylight. This is a decrease of 3:14 hours of daylight over the course of the month, or 6.3 minutes a day!
Temperature
As far as temperatures go, youre most likely in for a treat as August is Icelands second warmest! August has an average high temperature of 13 degrees Celsius (55 F) and average lows of about 8 degrees Celsius (47 F). The beginning of the month is the warmest, piggy backing on the warmest month of the year, July. The end of August concludes with an average temperature of 10 C (51 F). Doesnt sound all that warm? Dont forget that Iceland is situated right below the Arctic Circle!
Precipitation
The average August rainfall in Iceland is about 62 mm (2.4 inches) which is a bit on the high end. So, be prepared for mixed weather. Iceland is known for its rather capricious weather so youd be wise to bring layers. That said, odds are youre going to get nice days in August and when its nice in Iceland, its like a paradise!
