Top 3 Tours in South Iceland

Magazine Top 3 Tours in South Iceland

You’ve seen the pictures – now you want to experience it yourself! At Berjaya Hotels you can book a variety of tours at the Your Perfect Day desks to some of the most amazing and unforgettable landscapes you’ve ever been to. The tours are operated by Iceland Travel.

But which ones to pick? So little time, so much to see, especially around the Reykjavík capital surroundings. We have amazing staff at our hotels to help you pick the best tours of the season to take and here are their Top3 recommendations for your visit this spring!

1.     Thórsmörk Valley and Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Tour

If you’ve seen images of Iceland from behind a waterfall, they are most likely from Seljalandsfoss. This tour will make it’s first stop at this falling stream where you can walk behind the powerful curtain of water. Be sure to bring a rain coat for this one!

The next stop is Thórsmörk Valley, which is a well-known hiking ground between two glaciers. You will have ample time to hike around the area with it’s amazing viewpoints, rivers and wooded surroundings and also see the site of the famous volcanic eruption, Eyjafjallajökull. Good shoes are a must!

The tour takes 8-9 hours and you will be driven back to Reykjavík after an exhilarating super Jeep excursion.

2.     Glacier Walk and Northern Lights

This tour combines the two most exotic winter season experiences you can enjoy in Iceland: a walk on the magnificient Sólheimajökull glacier tongue that stretches to the grounds close to the southern town of Vík, and the amazing Aurora Borealis, also known as the northern lights.

The glacier walk will a safe and easy introduction to the Icelandic Glaciers, where you get to see water cauldrons, crevasses, ridges and waterways. Afterwards you will be driven to the Skógafoss waterfall where you’ll enjoy traditional Icelandic dinner at a local restaurant and after you’re all filled up with Icelandic dishes, you will head out into the darkness to look for the northern lights, with a ”mandatory” stop at the lit up Seljalandfoss waterfall.

Be sure to note that northern lights are a natural phenomenon so there can never be 100% guarantee you will see them. But when booking your day trip, check for weather conditions: on a clear day with no overcast or stormy winds, and with strong aurora activity you’re chances will improve.

3.     Volcanoes and Glaciers Helicopter Tour

The unforgettable experience of a lifetime: flying over volcanoes and glaciers on a helicopter! This spectacular tour flies over the Thórsmörk Nature Reserve and infamous Eyjafjallajökull glacier volcano and lands on one of the world’s youngest volcanoes.

You will also see the glacier tongue Gígjökull that was split in half by hot melting lava, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of Hekla, the most active volcano in Iceland, and the Westmann Islands.

The route back will be along the black sand beach stretch that is hundreds of kilometers long and follows the South Coast. Movies like Oblivion, Prometheus and other science fiction films have been shot there. The helicopter ride will be one of the most incredible experiences of your life and gives you a unique perspective on already astonishing views.
