Does It Snow In Iceland?

Magazine Does It Snow In Iceland?

Any Icelander will tell you that when they meet someone from another country, the first two questions they hear are, “Is it really cold in Iceland?” and “Wait, isn’t Iceland green and Greenland is icy, and the names were switched on purpose?”

So for all to hear, to answer these two questions once and for all, yes, it is cold in Iceland and yes, the names were switched on purpose, by clever Vikings trying to keep people away. And just in case there are a few of you out there embarrassed to ask the question, we will save you from having to ask out loud.

YES, it does snow in Iceland.

For those of you planning on traveling to Iceland, you should pack clothing for all kinds of weather, snow, rain, wind, hail, everything you can think of. Except for hot, we don’t get hot.

There is a saying in Iceland, “if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes.” This may seem exaggerated but we promise you, there may be no place where this is truer. So be prepared.

Peak snow months are around Christmas and the New Year. But to be honest, it isn’t uncommon for it to randomly start snowing most months of the year, except for June, July, and August. If you want to completely avoid snow, then visit during the summer season. But any other time of the year, you may look outside your window and see white flakes coating the ground.

But don’t worry too much. The weather will change in five minutes...

From Berjaya Hotels, Iceland's trusted hotel chain. If snow is your thing, we suggest checking out Berjaya Akureyri Hotel, located in north Iceland - considered to have the best snow in the country. Cheers!
