Things to do in Akureyri

Magazine Things to do in Akureyri

In Iceland, Akureyri is often called the capital of the North, and there is a reason to it. Akureyri is the perfect place to enjoy the local culture, restaurants, museums, cafes and historical sites in Northern Iceland. It´s a vibrant little town with lots of culture and events all year round. This beautiful town and surrounding region has so much to offer, from the local geothermal pool to amazing natural wonders like Lake Myvatn, Waterfall Godafoss and Dettifoss but the latter one is Europe´s most powerful waterfall.  The geothermal pool is called Sundlaug Akureyrar and it can easily be called a water paradise on a world class scale for the whole family summer and winter. The geothermal pools are open all year-round. Have you ever swum in open air with snow falling on your head and still feel warm? There are two swimming pools. On the premises there are two water slides, splash-pool, an indoor pool, four hot-tubs, steam, sauna, massage parlor and a family park with a popular playground open in the summer.

In Akureyri there‘s a variety of museums with rich collections, such as the Doll and Toy Museum, the Museum of Motorcycles and the Industrial Museum, which tells the history of the town. The Icelandic Aviation Museum has aircrafts on display and tells the story of Icelandic aviation history. The Akureyri Art Museum is the only art museum located outside of the capital area and is located in a building that is a good example of the Bauhaus school of architecture. The Christmas Garden (Jólagarðurinn) just 10 km from the center is a popular place among the locals and visitors, displaying Christmas decorations from all over the world along with traditional Icelandic Christmas items, all year round.

In Akureyri there is the opportunity of whale watching in summer and fall, skiing and snowboarding in Mt. Hlidarfjall in winter, all kinds of concerts and cultural events in Akureyri´s cultural center, Hof, all year round, and so much more.

The northern lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, frequently shine bright in Akureyri in winter from September to April, on cold clear nights. They occur high above the surface of the earth and are created by electrically charged particles that make the thin air shine in bright green and pink colors. On good nights you can get an amazing natural lights show like none you´ve seen before!
