Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura's history

The story

In 1964 the people of Loftleidir Icelandic Airlines decided to build a hotel in Reykjavik. At this time competition was fierce and a fare war raging. In 1963, Loftleidir Icelandic started to offer its passengers the possibility of making a stop-over in Reykjavik on their way between the US and the continent. This became very popular, and it soon became evident that more hotel rooms were needed for these visitors. Work on this hotel project started in the end of November 1964 and a new hotel was opened up on May 1st 1966. A big inauguration party was held with 1500 guests.

Popular among Icelanders as well
The Hotel Loftleidir became very popular and enabled the airline to offer an increasing number of passengers the possibility of a stop over in Iceland. The hotel also became very popular among the people of Reykjavik offering many world known entertainers at their dances and other functions. The hotel restaurant became known for good food, especially the Cold Buffet presented in a Viking ship style. The Cafeteria was very popular as well, it was the only restaurant in Reykjavik that opened up at 5 in the morning.

Hotel Loftleidir today
In 2011 the hotel was refurbished along with the whole hotel chain of Icelandair Hotels. It changed names and is today Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura. The name refers to the location of the hotel, situated in the middle of Oskjuhlid hill and Nautholsvik beach. It is one of the biggest hotels in Iceland with 220 rooms. The hotel offers superb meeting and conference facilities and it is known for its excellent services.
