Whale watching on dry land

Stepping into this old warehouse-turned-exhibition space in the Reykjavík Harbour area of Grandi is like diving into the ocean without water in it. The blue, dim lights make for the perfect setting for the life-size models of 23 species of whales, „swimming“ above your heads and right before your eyes.

With the help of marine biologist Edda Elísabet Magnúsdóttir the models have been made to resemble the species as accurately as possible. This is the largest whale exhibition in Europe and where better indeed to see it than Iceland!

Spotting a whale is always a combination of luck and good timing, so getting to know these incredible creatures in a calm, beautiful setting is a really powerful experience. From right whales to humpbacks to dolphins and beaked whales, there are fun facts to learn about the lives of these giants either through information tables or an audio tour. Whale

The exhibition opened two years ago, in February 2014, through an idea  that was born out of growing tourism and the curiosity and interest in whales and nature. To realize this idea, entrepreneur Hörður Bender worked with investors from Landsbréf – Icelandic Tourism Fund and designed a state- of-the-art exhibition about the lives and stories of the whales found around Iceland.

The tour has been loved by visitors! On the Whales of Iceland Facebook-site Gretchen Hocker writes: "I visited this amazing true to size whale museum while in Reykjavik last week. Wow! I recommend anyone visiting Iceland to stop in and learn." And Fränzi Raminza: "We spend 3 hours in your Blue Rooms, it was oceanic." And Kitt Bradley comments on a link: "Loved this exhibit so much, one of the highlights of my trip!"

The Whales of Iceland exhibition is a 5 minute walk from Icelandair Hotel Reykjavík Marina!
