In Iceland March is Moustache Season!

Literally MottuMars means Carpet March, but it translates also into Moustache March, which is Iceland’s equivalent of Movember, the campaign for awareness and fund-raising for men’s cancer. Movember was initiated in 2003 in Australia and since then it has spread all over the world.

The campaign tradition includes men shaving their faces in the beginning of the month and for the next 30 days only allow their moustaches to grow. This is both a lot of fun and translates into donations online. Anyone – male or female – can open a fund-raising profile on MottuMars’ website and raise money in the name of either themselves or a loved one growing an awkward ”carpet” on their upper lip. The campaign is also celebrated by a moustache competition where fashionable facial hair competes one against the other and raise money for the Icelandic Cancer Society.

Last year the MottuMars campaign raised awareness on colon cancer and to support the campaign a number of Iceland's well-known actors and musicians took part in a tv-ad where they shook their booty to Amaba Dama's song "Hossa Hossa".

Around 750 men are diagnosed with cancer in Iceland annually. At the time of writing this post, the 2016 MottuMars campaign has raised approximately 4,5 million ISK (32 000€ or 35 500 USD).

If you run into moustached men at Icelandair Hotels, do not be surprised! Our guys also support the good cause, like Runar from Satt Restaurant here.
