The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are among the most spectacular phenomena on earth, and Iceland is just the perfect place to see them. At Icelandair Hotel Hamar the lights are out after dark since the hotel is away from any significant light pollution. Here the northern lights shine bright while you relax in our hotel garden with a drink, in the hot tubs or take a walk to the nearest nature outside the hotel to enjoy the dancing colors in the sky. White and green are usually the dominant colors but sometimes there are considerable color variations like pink and red.
The ideal weather conditions for the Northern lights is bright cold weather between September and April.
What are the northern lights?
The Northern Lights occur high above the surface of the earth where the atmosphere has become extremely thin, in an altitude of 100-250km. They are created by electrically charged particles that make the thin air shine bright, somewhat similar to a fluorescent light. It is electricity that creates them; protons and electrons caused by electronic storms. They escape into the earth's atmosphere and hit molecules in the atmosphere and that causes the molecules to glow, thus creating the auroras. All this just for us!
What our ancestors might have thought about those dazzling supernatural colors in the sky we will never know. And we recommend that you let your imagination go free when you see them and enjoy this spectacular show that the nature puts on just for you!
