Álfaskólinn, Iceland´s Elf School

Magazine Álfaskólinn, Iceland´s Elf School

Elves are deeply embedded in Icelandic culture. Medieval tales of Viking battles with elves and trolls has transcended generations, remaining a traditional part of Icelandic upbringing.

Elf tales continue to be a prevalent in Iceland. Many believe the development of infrastructure, such as roads being built, were blocked by elves whose homes were in the midst of construction sites. There are literally roads that curve around areas believed to be elf homes…

Although stories remained mixed, the depiction of elves has changed over time, going from elves being at odds with humans, to some elves even helping humans. Overall, the general characterization of elves has softened through the years.

Álfaskólinn, the first and only Icelandic “Elf school,” is located in the capital city of Reykjavik. The school opened in 1991 and has a special curriculum designed to teach students and visitors about the different kinds of elves that are believed to exist. According to school founder Magnús Skarphéðinsson, 13 different kinds of elves and hidden people inhabit the island. Elves are said to vary in height, beginning at five centimeters tall, while hidden people are said to look exactly like regular people – only invisible to most of us.

The mythology of elves in Iceland dates back to the 10th century when Norwegian Vikings first settled the island. Ongoing research is conducted and stories are collected and recorded for the purpose of continued preservation. Magnús also asserts that gnomes, fairies, and trolls inhabit Iceland as well.

Álfaskólinn offers five-hour educational excursions which finish with coffee and pancakes at the school. During these tours, Magnús delivers lectures detailing information about where these beings live, what they look like, and how they perceive humans. He also relays the personal accounts of hundreds of Icelanders’ encounters with elves.

There are even certificate programs for residents and travelers alike that can be earned in as little as an afternoon. So, if you have ambitions of becoming a knowledgeable elfskateer during your Iceland travels, Álfaskólinn is the place to do it!  From Berjaya Hotels, Iceland’s premiere hotel chain with nine locations including our newest addition, Berjaya Hotel Vik (link).
