Located in one of Iceland’s most breathtaking natural settings, near Thingvellir National Park, Icelandair Hotel Hengill is a new premier hotel that opened in the summer of 2008. Just 30 minutes from Reykjavik, it’s beautifully situated on the slopes of Mt. Hengill, with a great view over Lake Thingvallavatn and the mountains surrounding the lake. The view can perhaps be best enjoyed while soaking in one of the hotel’s outdoor hot tubs.

The manager at Icelandair Hotel Hengill is Gudmundur Halldorsson. He has over 15 years of experience in the hotel business and has managed Hotel Hengill since it was opened in 2008. Gudmundur is a dedicated fly-fisherman and has been fishing since he was just a toddler. At every opportunity he gets, he goes trout fishing in Thorsteinsvik by Lake Thingvallavatn. Gudmundur also enjoys hiking and is well acquainted with the area surrounding Mount Hengill; one of his favourite trails is the one leading to Jorutindur Mountain, where you can check if the ancient troll Lady Jorunn is on duty.
The emphasis in the cuisine at the hotel is in line with the manager’s interests, as trout from Lake Thingvallavatn (some of the best in the country) is often served at the restaurant, along with smoked brown trout and char. It is also worth mentioning that Icelandair Hotel Hengill is probably the only establishment in Iceland that offers planktivorous char on its menu.
