Iceland’s Hrunamannahreppur district is easier to visit than it is to pronounce. Just 100 kilometers from the capital, the district is an ideal base for visiting the famed Golden Circle sights of Gullfoss waterfall and the Geysir geothermal fields.
It is also rich in history and is the oldest of all municipalities mentioned in the 11th-century Book of Settlement. Recently an Italian scientist even came up with a theory that the Holy Grail is buried in a secret vault in the highlands above the countryside.
In the heart of the district’s rolling hills and fertile farmland is the 750 person town of Fludir, famous for its greenhouses which help grow the nation’s best mushrooms. And in the heart of the town is Hotel Fludir.
The hotel’s two conference halls are popular for business people looking to hold events in the countryside, yet comfortably close to Reykjavík. For those on a relaxing visit, Fludir boasts a swimming pool with steaming hot tubs, an 18-hole golf course, a football pitch, and horse rental facilities. Numerous walking paths wind throughout the neighboring fields. Even better—rumor has it that Fludir has some of Iceland’s best weather.
Hotel Fludir’s famous restaurant overlooks these fields and serves dishes making the most of the district’s famous produce. Its bar is popular with guests and locals alike. And, who knows, with some locally-grown veggies to fuel a hearty walk in the countryside, you may discover even more of the district’s hidden treasures.
